How should coffee be stored?
To maintain optimum freshness, freshly roasted coffee should be purchased in small quantities sufficient for only one or two weeks. It should be stored in an airtight container in a dark cool place (pantry). Coffee loses aroma and becomes stale quickly when exposed to air. It can be placed in a freezer for long-term storage. Ideally, small quantities of coffee should be placed in individual airtight freezer bags, with as little air left inside the bag as possible. Once thawed, coffee should not be refrozen.

How much ground coffee is needed to brew one cup?
A cup is defined as 6 ounces of water before brewing. The Specialty Coffee Association of America defines 2 tablespoons (.36 oz) per cup as the proper measure for brewed coffee if using American standards.

When brewing a pot of coffee, generally one level tablespoon per cup is sufficient. However, this quantity is simply a starting point and should be increased or decreased according to personal taste.

How many calories does each cup of coffee contain?
A cup of black unsweetened coffee, whether flavored or not, contains approximately 5 calories.

What is the expected shelf life of whole bean and ground coffee?
Generally, coffee does not spoil, but it loses aroma with age and becomes stale. Oxygen speeds up the staling process. Ground coffee becomes stale faster than whole bean coffee. Depending on the type of packaging and how effectively it keeps out oxygen, coffee in an unopened package may still retain some of its original aroma and character even after 18 to 24 months. Zavida uses packaging materials with a high oxygen barrier rating.

Once opened, coffee loses its freshness within a few days and should be consumed quickly.

Can I use this coffee with boiling water? (Is it instant coffee?)
Zavida does not produce any instant coffee, it produces only gourmet whole bean and ground gourmet coffees. Our freshly roasted coffee must be prepared in a coffee brewer, e.g., percolator, drip, French press, or espresso to extract its flavour.

Is Zavida decaf coffee naturally decaffeinated or do you use a chemical process?
Zavida uses coffee that has been decaffeinated without chemicals using a natural process.

Are Zavida Coffees gluten-free?
Yes, our coffees are gluten free.

What is the purpose of the round plastic disc in the center of or near the Zavida logo?
This disc is a one-way valve that allows carbon dioxide (C02) to escape, while preventing oxygen from entering the bag. C02 is released naturally by freshly roasted coffee and would rupture the package if not allowed to escape.
