Brewing Coffee without Electricity

Hello, camping season – nothing is better than the fresh smell of pine while gazing at a million stars by a warm fire with great company. After a long night of laughter when the cool mornings roll around, any coffee-lover will agree, (whether you’re in the big city or relaxing in the countryside) a fresh cup of coffee to start the day is non-negotiable.  

With limited space and resources (and a lack of respect for instant coffee), how do you make a great cup of coffee while you’re in the great outdoors?

DIY Coffee Brewing Bags
A DIY coffee brewing bag is a convenient way to travel with your favorite Zavida coffee without compromising your carrying space. The concept was influenced by the French press; the brewing bag is steeped in boiling water for a short period of time. They're inexpensive and super easy to make. Here's a step-by-step guide to creating your own.

One Cup Coffee
If you like the idea of the DIY brewing bag, but not the idea of Doing-It-Yourself, then the single serve coffee filter or the pour over travel mug is the next best option. Similar to the concept of a tea brewer, the filter rests atop of the mug, while you pour hot water over the coffee. There are several types to choose from in terms of style and material, and most importantly, they’re all easy to clean and carry in your travel bag.

Cold Brew
For a true java connoisseur, the best way to enjoy the caffeinated godsend is via cold brew. Cold brew extracts the most flavor from coffee and reduces the bitterness. Even better, no special equipment is needed to make cold brew coffee. Just coffee, water and a container. Cold brewing the coffee allows the beans to release their full flavor since no filter is used to absorb the oil that is in the beans. Additionally, because the grounds steep instead of percolate, the water draws the full flavor from the bean slowly. The coffee flavor has a depth and richness that cannot be achieved with traditional brewing.

Because it takes time to let cold brewing work, we suggest making a larger batch to travel with for the duration of your stay.

Ingredients
1-part ground coffee
8 parts water
Filter or strainer

Substitutions
Proportionately one gallon of water would need 16 ounces of ground coffee, two gallons would need 32 ounces, and so on. An eight-ounce cup of water would require one ounce of coffee.

Directions
1. Stir the coffee into the water to ensure all the grounds get wet.
2. Let sit for 12 hours.
3. After 12 hours, strain the coffee either through a filter or strainer to remove the grounds.

The result is a smooth and flavorful cup. After the coffee is brewed, the finished product can either be heated or iced, depending on your personal taste.

However you spend your summer in the countryside, you can still brew a fresh cup of coffee every day!
